Mission Statement: The purpose of the New Milford Municipal Alliance Committee is to encourage the community to practice healthy, drug-free living and to provide education and resources on the prevention of, recognition of, and consequences of substance abuse. We strive through various community drug-free activities, education programs and financial support of community services to assist New Milford residents in their goals to learn about and live substance abuse free lives.Vision Statement: The New Milford Municipal Alliance Committee is committed to providing education on the dangers and misuse of alcohol / substance abuse to create a well-informed community and a community which is free of vaping/alcohol/substance abuse.
About the Committee: The committee operates through members and many other residents who volunteer for specific events and activities that the committee sponsors. These volunteers represent many facets of the community including but not limited to: educators from New Milford Public Schools, employees of the borough, police officers, parents of children in New Milford, high school students, and other concerned citizens of New Milford. The three main components of the Municipal Alliance Committee are fundraising, education, and special events. Fundraising is done to assist the LEAD (police officers entering the schools to educate students on substance abuse) program in New Milford.
The educational aspect of the committee is fulfilled through programs sponsored or supported by the committee. Past programs have included:
- Parenting and support classes – offered to residents of New Milford who have children
- The Black Poster Project – offered to residents of New Milford to raise awareness about the devastation caused by addiction
- Black Balloon Day – offered to residents of New Milford to raise awareness about how widespread addiction is
- Elks Peer Leadership Conference – scholarships offered to several New Milford High School students to attend the annual weekend conference located in Long Branch, NJ
The committee also sponsors a number of entertaining substance abuse free activities. Events have included:
- National Night Out
- Annual NMMA Fishing Derby
- Middle School Halloween Dance
- A.D.A.M Memorial Event
- “Movies Under the Stars” in partnership with NM Recreation
The committee usually meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Conference Room of Borough Hall unless otherwise noted on the calendar.
